Laurie Downey is a visual artist/designer and educator; she started the Local Stories Project in 1998 and has been directing it since. Her studio practice includes large-scale mural installations and space dividers, set design in local theaters,  and publication design. In addition to Local Stories work, Downey has taught design courses at the Maine College of Art and works as a visiting artist with high school students to design and build sets.
